Trump on the brink of offering UK ‘tariff free trade deal’ says ambassador
Woody Johnson, the U.S. ambassador in London, praised the ‘special relationship’ and said the President wanted a ‘quick deal’ between the two countries.
The claim comes in spite of a Cabinet row this week after a briefing paper indicated that the UK’s plans for Brexit could hamper a transatlantic deal.
Mr Johnson said Trump would ‘put his full energy’ behind an agreement and said: ‘The sky’s the limit,’ the Daily Express reported.
Speaking ahead of Trump’s visit next week the ambassador said the two countries should aim for a zero-tariff agreement, saying: ‘I think it would be bold and why not start off with that premise?
